2013 News

December 2013

I'm supporting a young lad with Aspergers who's trying to get his record The Spirit of Christmas into the charts this year. He wrote it himself and recorded it with his classmates and now he's trying to compete with Robbie & the Fishwives and all that lot, but without the publicity machine! There's a bunch of volunteers helping out, and thanks to them he's got a video and a website and a fair bit of coverage mainly on the radio. All the profits are going to charity - the NAtional Autistic Society, Nordoff Robbins (who do music based therapy) and his local school's Special needs dept. More info at Fynnjan.com if you want to have a look.
Here's the art I've done for him so far. It has a festive theme which appropriately leads me on to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and happy New Year. I'll be back in '14..."

The spirit of Christmas

November 2013

Just about to hit the road again for the last time this year. I'll be heading off to Malta for their annual con this weekend. Looking forward to a break in some warmer climbs than damp Britain.
No real schedule as such, just spending most of Saturday and Sunday at a table. I'll be doing sketches this time, charging for them, but all the money will be donated to charity as per usual.

Then that's that for 2013! My first official appearance in 2014 will be at the London SuperCon in March - so I have a few months off...

September 2013

Just a reminder that I'll be at the London Shaftesbury Avenue Forbidden Planet store from 1pm this Saturday, primarily to sign my book - The Art Of Charlie Adlard - but I'm sure I can sign a few other items as well. Sorry I haven't posted any news for ages... things have been a tad busy, what with TWD going bi-weekly and all the build up to it's 10th anniversary.

First off - I completely missed to tell you all about my appearance in Dublin last month... Whoops. I'll try not to let that happen again. Suffice to say that it was incredibly busy, my queue was enormous, so apologies to all of you that I couldn't get sketches done for before they closed the line - hopefully I'll be back in Dublin at some point to amend that!

October is shaping up to be the busiest of all months... First up is the New York Comic Con from the 10th to the 13th. I'll be there to help celebrate TWD's 10th anniversary, and there'll be lots of stuff happening - signings, parties, and exhibitions. I'll fill you in with the details when I get them myself.
Then the weekend after is the first ever Lakes comics festival in Kendal UK on the 19th and 20th. It's my ONLY appearance outside of local comics appearances in my home country this year and I'm really looking forward to it. Looks like it's shaping up to be a very unique, European-inspired, event... I hope it becomes a regular show in the comics calendar.
Then - again to celebrate the 10th anniversary - I'll be appearing at Infinity And Beyond - my local comic shop - on the evening of Friday 25th, to sign special edition copies of said comic.
And, lastly [phew], I've just agreed to do a signing at Forbidden Planet in London on November 2nd at 1pm. This time to celebrate The Art Of Charlie Adlard. A book about - you guessed it - my art. It'll officially be launched at NYCC and the Lakes over here, but this will be my first official signing of the book.

My only other appearance will be in Malta on November 30th and December 1st at it's yearly convention. More news on that nearer the time...

June 2013

Here's a link to a GREAT interview I did with Sequential Highway. http://sequentialhighway.com/julinda-morrow-interviews-charlie-adlard

Also - I'd like to draw your attention to a You Tube video by a friend of mine, Elsa Charretier, a promising artist who I'm - for want of a better word - doing a bit of mentoring with. Her work gets better and better with each page. Check it out -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2p3IVhcbAY&feature=youtu.be

May 2013

Just got news on the completion and availability of Occupy Comics in comic shops across the globe.

The reason I'm making you all aware of this is - aside from the fact that it's a very good cause and a rather excellent anthology which actually has something to say - that I'm a contributor.

So please donate to a worthy charity by buying the book.

Here's some early reviews for Occupy Comics: LCS Edition #1...

"I would recommend this as a whole for people interested in what this movement really looks like. Ninety percent of all media is owned by six major corporations with some major agendas for growing that market share. Objectivity or insight on a movement that threatens their very existence isn’t something you can count on. Occupy Comics #1 engages and invites discourse. Give it a shot." 4.5 out of 5

PICK OF THE WEEK "This is a perfect marriage of comics and politics. How could it not be this week’s pick?... Thought-provoking and entertaining and shockingly non-partisan"
(- Graphic Policy)
http://graphicpolicy.com/2013/05/21/picks-of-the-week-occupy-comics-1-and-9-other-solid-choices/

"Taking the time to write anything about this comic at all should be for no other reason than to say 'Help support those who are fighting for equality by spreading the word that corporate media will not spread.'" 9 out of 10

PICK OF THE WEEK "There was no way that this title was not going to top the list for us this week... Composed by some of the most talented and influential creators in the industry, from Art Spiegelman to Alan Moore, this anthology embraces the seemingly impossible task of conveying what the Occupy movement meant to its participants... Occupy Comics wages war on your expectations... you expect to be insulated from its intended message, but the razor-sharp delivery of focused bursts from some of the best creative minds in the industry make that impossible."

First off, I'll be attending Copenhagen Comics over the weekend of 1st and 2nd of June, a festival I've heard very good things about, so if there are any European fans out there, I'll see you all there! Here's a link to the website - copenhagencomics.dk/?lang=en

And secondly, here's an exclusive announcement -

Charlie Adlard's new series to be published by SOLEIL !

French comics publisher SOLEIL is proud to announce that Charlie Adlard, artist of the international best-seller "The Walking Dead", has teamed-up with comics and novels writer Ange and screenwriter Patrick Renault, for a new contemporary horror comic series, titled “V.S.B.”

------

SOLEIL is one of the main French-speaking comics publishers with more than 300 new original graphic novels released each year.
Its catalog gathers world-widely known series as Sky.Doll, Lanfeust or Universal War One, published by Marvel Comics in the USA."

April 2013

Had a great time at the Shrewsbury Cartoon Festival last weekend. The sun came out and it was warm... so there was a great atmosphere. I struggled a bit with my "big board" and it didn't come out as I thought it might, but, as a first attempt, I think I should be quite pleased. At least I finished it!
Thanks to all the fans that came and said hello. It was a pleasure to meet you all.

Next up will be my appearance at the Copenhagen festival in the first weekend of June. More on that nearer the time.

It's been a fairly quiet few months since Angouleme and Seattle, but nearing the horizon is the Shrewsbury Cartoon Festival, where I'm contributing to one of the "big boards" this year. Here is a template that I'm using to paint my design on a massive outdoor piece of white board in the square in Shrewsbury town.
The festival takes place from April 19th to 21st - and I'll be there on Saturday the 20th. It's a great event [now in it's 10th year], primarily focusing on newspaper/gag cartoons, but hopefully with my involvement [I sit in on the committee too] we're going to broaden it out to comic books as well... so watch this space for 2014! Even though I'll be busy painting, I'll be more than happy to sign comics and do little sketches for people if they're passing by.

Febuary 2013

Please do not send me any unsolicited requests for autographs or sketches to my home address. I'm now getting so many it is impacting on my deadlines. Really sorry it's come this but I am more than happy to sketch/sign at any of my public appearances

Since it's just over two weeks to go before my appearance at Seattle's ECCC - I thought I'd post my signing schedule. The show's dates are March 1st - 3rd. Hope to see anybody attending there...

Friday (show hours are 2p-8p)
3:00-4:30pm - signing
6:30-8:00pm - signing

Saturday (hours are 10a-7p)
11:00a-12:30pm - signing
1:00-2:00pm Image/Skybound panel
4:30-6:00pm - signing

Sunday (hours are 10a-5p)
11:00a-12:30pm - signing
1:40-2:40pm - Spotlight panel
3:00-4:30pm - signing

It's come to my knowledge that there is someone out there forging my signature and sketches [apparently other artists have fallen victim too], so please be aware of that when buying original art, other than getting sketches personally by myself or through my agent Mark Hay at Splashpageart.com. A link to the article.... here

Also, on a lighter note - I've donated a page [below] to the Jeffery Catherine Jones art book which is in support of a fine documentary that Maria Cabardo has done on her. So please support this great artistic undertaking... I've seen the doc. and it's well worth a viewing.
Here's a link to the film's FB page... here
And a site about the book etc...here

Look - I'm animated in Paris railway stations!

Thank you Delcourt... Always doing something cool.

Just thought I'd let everyone know that a talk\interview I did with the wonderful Hugo Frey for the Comics Forum at Leed's Thought Bubble last year is up on their website. Go to http://comicsforum.org and click on the 2012 archives to hear the MP3. It's a good and lively talk.

And, also, I just thought I'd share with you my HERO initiative cover for TWD 100 - please donate vast amounts of money for a really good cause

January 2013

Just got my schedule through for Angouleme - so here it is, starting on Feb 1st -

FRIDAY - SIGNING AT DELCOURT, 2-4PM
SATURDAY - SIGNING AT DELCOURT, 5-7PM
SUNDAY - SIGNING AT DELCOURT, 2 - 3.30PM
4PM - AWARDS CEREMONY

The rest of my days there are taken up by many interviews my friends at Delcourt have arranged! Hope all that's useful to anybody attending.

And just as an aside - my drummer friend, David Viana, has sent me another cool picture... this time it's his TWD snare. Very nice. So I sent him a picture of my kit - complete with my self designed "Cosmic Rays" bass drum head... Oh, and if you're REALLY interested, our band have another gig... this time it's at the Yorkshire House pub in Shrewsbury, UK. That's on February 12th... come one, come all!"

Happy 2013 everyone!

This is my first post of the new year and I've already missed reminding everyone of my signings in Infinity & Beyond [my local comic shop] in early January. Sorry. Anyway, the two events went off splendidly - so thanks for everybody who turned up and I hope you all had a great time.

My next appearance will be at the giant that is Angouleme at the beginning of February [1st to the 3rd]. I arrive Thursday evening, so miss the first day, but I'm around for the rest of it where TWD is up for Best Comic Series at their awards ceremony - the Oscars of the European comics industry.... so I have my fingers crossed! I'll post my schedule when I have it.

Time for a new year clear out too. I've decided to close my Yahoo e-mail address and exclusively use my Facebook page as means of communication to the outside world. As time has gone on and I've gotten busier and busier, I've found it more and more of a struggle to reply to every e-mail sent to me, so I'm streamlining all that which will hopefully give me slightly more time to check all my sites and hopefully get back to people more efficiently. That's the idea anyway...
